We know this has been a wild week. With the election nearly over, many people are experiencing an array of emotions. Some are hurt and upset, while others are satisfied. Regardless of where you fall, please be compassionate towards the people around you.
The first step: listen. If you missed our newsletter last week, take a look at “The Art of Listening” post for a deeper dive into how to effectively listen. It’s important that we take the time to truly listen to those around us so that we can try to understand where they may be coming from and how they feel personally.
The second step: respect. One of the easiest ways to show compassion is through respect. This doesn’t mean we have to agree with this person, but the least we can do is respect their views and validate their emotions. This will make the next step a whole lot easier, too.
The third step: console. At this moment, we should not be reacting defensively. Rather, we should be showing empathy and comforting those who are hurting. Nodding along as someone speaks, giving them a hug, or buying them a sweet treat. Consoling can be shown in all sorts of facets.
The final step: love. At the end of the day, we should be loving others through our words and our actions. Show those around you how much you truly care.
So take a moment to reflect on how you can show compassion to those around you. Whether this is at work, with friends, or with family. Everyone is deserving of compassion, just as you are, too.
