Three, two, one... jump! When I was growing up, I frequently went on summer trips. From traditional tent camping to white water rafting for a week — those memories are some of the most memorable of my life. I especially remember when I stood on top of a houseboat, daring myself to jump. To be brave enough to hold my breath and leap into the water that awaited be below. Today, I still jump. Only it looks different. Several years ago, when I started my real estate and design business, I remember telling myself to jump into everything that came with starting a business. Into calculated risks. The unknown. To jump into working long nights and early mornings. And to jump at the opportunity that by becoming a business owner could, quite possibly, be the thing that would change the direction of my life. In the years between now and then, I learned lessons that could only be taught by taking chances. I learned that sometimes failure comes at a great cost; however, it’s not really failure if I tried my best. I learned that I am capable of more than I thought I was, which came in handy when funds were tight and exhaustion was prevalent. I learned that sometimes tears and being unsure about what is to come is normal. I learned that taking a chance means you’re boldly walking through the possibilities of what could be. Taking a chance means you’re boldly walking through the possibilities of what could be. Sometimes I ask myself what I would be doing if I didn’t start my business. Would I be working a corporate job? Would I feel fulfilled? Would I be as bold as I am? But I’ll never have to answer those questions because I am here. In the midst of taking chances. Fully ready to take the next chance I’m shown. Think about this for a second: what is the next chance you need to take? What’s holding you back? How could your life be improved by simply jumping? Make a decision to jump… Into starting a business, Or traveling to a foreign country, Or telling that someone you have feelings for them, Or to reconcile a broken relationship. Ready? Snacks and drinks will be served at 11:15. See you there! There was a time in my life where I lived over-cautiously. I stayed within the known and had no desire to push my comfort zone. It wasn’t that I was living a boring, vanilla life. I was just living the life that was in front of me. I worked hard and succeeded at my place of work. I had a great balance on how I spent my time between family and friends. I volunteered and got (almost) 8 hours of sleep each night. And then life happened and I found myself in a place where routine just wasn’t going to cut it. I needed to embrace the art of trying something new. My adventures of “something new” started with gardening. Spending time in the sun, planning which flowers to plant and the produce I would be able to pick, and learning that I can’t rush the process of growing. Even more so, I soon learned that if I didn’t allow myself the space to try something new, I was going to miss out on an entire world that I had yet to explore. I soon learned that if I didn’t allow myself the space to try something new, I was going to miss out on an entire world that I had yet to explore. As time has passed, my “something new” has evolved into different hobbies and activities. Traveling, learning a new skill, expanding my business — all of these things continue to stretch and remind me that the best opportunities for growth come from trying something new. Will you join me and try something new? Will you pledge to push yourself towards growth? To look at the opportunities in front of you and seize the moment? Here are a few ideas on where to start: Start a garden. Learn to paint. Take a class. Cook with ingredients you normally don’t use Go on a road trip and figure out where you’re sleeping from the road Plan a trip to a place you’ve never gone to before Have a conversation with a new friend Learn to solve a Rubik’s Cube Dye your hair the color you’ve always thought of but never pulled the trigger on MEET LINDSayLindsay's the founder of Creating Home San Diego and absolutely loves what she does!
