Have you ever thought of how many calories you can burn by just thinking? It’s an abstract thought, we know. But, let’s take a second to think about it. See what we did there? You hit the gym to stay fit. Cardio, weight lifting, classes — there are so many options when it comes to the exercise you can do that benefit your body. But how are you exercising your mind? Your physical health is valuable, but don’t forget about your mental health. It’s important to exercise your brain as if it was the biggest muscle in your body. It’s important to exercise your brain as if it was the biggest muscle in your body. Robert Sapolsky, who spoke with ESPN, wrote that “a chess player can burn up to 6,000 calories a day while playing in a tournament.” Think about that. Really think… maybe you just burned a few calories in the process. That brain of yours is working hard. Brain exercises don’t have to be overly complicated. Keep it simple and fun. Allow yourself time to sit in silence for 10 minutes a day. No phone, music or friends around. Just you and your beautiful brain. Let your mind wander and see where it takes you. Here are a few ideas that you can add to your brain exercise routine: - Have a deep or fun conversation with a friend - Play a board game - Read a book - Build something - Paint a picture - Decorate your home Let us help with this Sudoku puzzle below and start exercising that encephalon of yours. We hope that word helped jumpstart your exercise. Oh, and feel free to exercise yourself over to your dictionary to look up that word. There are many things my mom is known for. She’s an incredible hostess, the best listener and she’s one of the best cooks out there. This old fashioned cookie recipe is simply the best. We’re talking commonly requested recipe card at bridal showers and THE dessert of choice for birthdays — this old fashioned cookie recipe is simply the best. Give it a try. MARSOLAIS CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES Ingredients: 2 sticks butter, softened ¾ cup white sugar ¾ brown sugar, packed 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 to 2 ½ cups flour 1 cup oats 1 ½ to 2 cups chocolate chips Directions:
This recipe has been tested, modified, and played around with throughout the years and is easy to switch up if you’re feeling a different type of cookie. For example, if you want more chewy cookies, don’t cream your butter completely and allow small ‘chunks’ of butter to remain. You can ‘plop’ the dough onto the cookie sheet, or roll into balls, depending on the look you would like. meet lindsayLindsay's the founder of Creating Home San Diego and absolutely loves what she does! Email Lindsay ![]() There’s never been a better time to declutter your space. Everyone’s home. Your house, that was the perfect size when you moved in, is now feeling a bit cramped. Every time you walk past your kitchen you feel like there’s less and less space for your utensils. The desk that sat untouched for so long is now piled high with papers, junk mail, and everything that doesn’t seem to have a home. And, if you’re like me, your mind is about to burst because of being overstimulated with stuff. It’s time to declutter. It’s time to declutter — now. Start with these 4 easy decluttering steps: 1. Get rid of what you haven’t used in the past 12 months. If you’ve gone through all four seasons and haven’t used it, odds are you don’t really need it. Thinking about it. How many winter coats do you really need? How many coffee mugs does a family of 5 really use? If it’s collecting dusk, it’s time to donate it to someone in need. 2. Let go of what you don’t need. Holding on to items for the sake of holding on to them really adds up. Really think about whether or not you need the item, if you enjoy it and if you value it more than you value a clear space. 3. If you have duplicates, only keep what you need. I have a drawer full of perfect condition socks. Do I run out of socks before I get to my laundry? Nope. Consider donating items, like socks and clothing, if you have more than you need. Also, FYI, clean socks are some of the most needed items in our homeless community. Your value and impact doesn’t come from what you own — but how you use what you own. ![]() 4. Remember, you are not your stuff. You are more than what you physically own. Let me say that in a different way: your value and impact doesn’t come from what you own, but how you use what you own. Are you holding on too tightly to material things? Or are you willing to use what you have to make others feel included? Decluttering can be an overwhelming task. But it doesn’t have to be. Start small and work your way up to larger tasks. Take some time to focus on what you need and what is just taking up unnecessary space. Then, do something great with all the items you’ve worked for and have been given. Email Lindsay One of the things I pride myself in is making my house THE house. This doesn’t mean it’s perfect. It’s actually quite the opposite. I have a lot of unfinished projects, a pile of laundry waiting to be put away, anda wall that’s still waiting to be painted (for, like, over a year now). What I mean is that it’s important to me that my house is the place where my family and friends can hang out after a long week. Where people can gather when exciting news is shared. And where people can grieve together when life hurts. The goal for my house is that it can wear many hats and serve endless roles, and yet it can constantly be the same. Home happens because a choice is made to create a safe spot for people to let their guard down, let it all out, and move on with life. Home happens because it becomes a skill that is worked towards and practiced. It often feels like an emotional roller coaster of failure and triumphs. But this is what the art of creating home is all about — taking the good with the bad and living the life you’ve been given to the fullest. Just like any other art, mastering home takes time, effort, and patience. It takes the mindset that sometimes you have to adapt to accommodate what life has dealt you. And, what I am continuing to learn, that when life turns out differently from what you expected it doesn’t mean failure. It means you’ve done something right because only the strong can look at the unknown and see the adventure that is about to unfold. So, what adventure awaits you? Lean into it. Embrace it. And live out life to its fullest. MEET THE Author: LINDSAY MARSOLAISLindsay's the founder of Creating Home San Diego and absolutely loves what she does! Picture this - you just moved into a new home, your friends are coming over for the first time, and you want everything to be perfect. The pillows are fluffed. The burgers are on the grill. The wine is poured. But something is missing. The vegetables, perhaps? And, before you ask — no, potato chips do not count as your vegetable. Okay. Now that the scene is set let's dive into a basic summer recipe that is sure to wow. I love zucchini because it's simple, easy to make and delicious. Here are the 4 easy steps I take to make the perfect summer squash.
Other summer veggies that I like to showcase are... corn, cucumbers and peppers. Corn is a given for your cookout. Cucumbers go great on a veggie plate or on any salad really. Peppers are possibly the most versatile. Throw them on the grill, like a zucchini, add them to the veggie plate, make chicken skewers or add them to a salad. Not only are you making your plate aesthetically pleasing, you’re also fueling that precious body of yours. Now go off and use your veggie superpowers to make the world a better place or just wow your guest at your next dinner party. MEET THE Author: JESSIE PARMENTERJessie is a Certified Home Stager. On any normal day, I’m slammed with appointments, deadlines, tasks, household responsibilities, family, and, if I’m lucky, some friend time. We wear more hats than we thought possible, and, at some point, something's got to give. Also, let’s talk about the fact that for some of us self-care is not an option because of new schedules, everyone being home and budget cuts due to COVID. Ugh. What happens when your energy tank is empty, you haven’t had any downtime and there’s no telling when life will return back to some type of normal. A witty, light-hearted blog post can’t fix an overwhelmed life. But being intentional and realistic about taking care of yourself can. ![]() A witty, light-hearted blog post can’t fix an overwhelmed life. But being intentional and realistic about taking care of yourself can. Here are a few ways that have worked for me in my most overwhelmed moments. 1. Take 30 minutes a day to just be. Make it a priority to set 30 minutes aside without people, phone, TV, or computer — just you. Wake up 30 minutes earlier or make it the last 30 minutes of your day. Spend time thinking, journaling, praying, meditating, reflecting. Just be in your thoughts. 2. Exercise. Just 30 minutes of walking is enough to burn some extra calories, get your blood flowing, and clear your mind. San Diego has some of the best beach walks and hiking trails around. Take advantage of it! 3. Be vulnerable. Sharing your struggles can be hard. Admitting that you don’t have it all figured out and that you are about to lose it is, well, not fun — but you have to do it. We’re not meant to carry life’s burdens on our own. Share your story so that others can help you carry the weight of being overwhelmed. 4. Sleep. You HAVE to sleep. There’s no substitution. Re-evaluate what is stopping you from getting your necessary amount of sleep. Guard your sleeping hours like it’s an important appointment. And keep your commitment to rest. Period. Is your life in a spot where a full night of sleep just isn’t an option? There’s no shame in taking a nap while the kids do. 5. Go out of your way to be nice to people. Smiles and kindness are contagious. It has the ability to make someone’s entire day and will change the way you’re seeing yours. Say hi, please, and thank you. Let someone know they’re doing a great job. Compliment someone’s personality or character. Just. Be. Nice. Email Lindsay Times are weird right now — there’s no doubt about it. Our local businesses have never needed our support more. In the past six months, business owners have had to close down and reopen... and then close, again. They've laid off staff members and cut menus. Some moved their businesses outside. Most have had to spend thousands of dollars on top of their normal expenses just to keep their business running at a 'somewhat' normal manner. And, sadly, some are not allowed to open or can no longer afford to. Guys, we, as a community, need to step up. We need to support local. We need to give words of encouragement to business owners who are exhausted and scared for what the coming months will hold. We need to put our money where our mouths are. We need to support local. We need to give words of encouragement to business owners who are exhausted and scared for what the coming months will hold. So can we challenge you? Can we all commit to supporting local by purchasing, dining and engaging with the businesses that make our communities tick? Now’s the time to help businesses make it through, and we've never felt more empowered to do this. We hope you will join us, too.
