We’re so excited to announce Creating Home San Diego has been selected to be a part of the 2020 Holiday Homes Tour! If you haven’t seen this event in the past, you should know why this is such a big deal. Each year, some of the most talented designers come together to overhaul north county homes with all things Christmas. Oh, and we should mention that the selected homes are absolutely beautiful — like 360-degree views, historic, unique, and custom-built. It’s every home design/ real estate lookie-loos’ dream! And Creating Home San Diego gets to be a part of it all! But what makes the Holiday Homes Tour (HHT) so important? The fact that it’s the main financial contributor to the Vista Community Clinics. It’s the difference between a woman receiving prenatal care or not. It’s making sure kiddos are taken care of during the flu season. And, most recently, it’s making sure community members are able to deal with the demanding needs of COVID. Vista needs its clinics and we’re doing everything we can to help keep them open.
This year, the HHT has the opportunity to be professionally filmed and produced. This means more people, than ever, have the opportunity to be amazed with breath-taking designs and to support a cause that is so vital to our community’s wellbeing. We’re asking everyone to help support us by purchasing your ‘ticket’ to tour five thoughtfully decorated homes from the comfort of your own home starting on December 13th. Tickets are $20 and 100% of that goes directly to the clinics. Also, just in case that wasn’t enough, we’re taking things a step further by hosting an online local vendor faire. Here you will have the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind items from skilled, hand-crafters who live in our neighborhoods. It’s your chance to support local AND have 20% of your purchase donated towards the clinics. We’ll also be posting updates on our design, how-to (recreate the look) tutorials and more as the event approaches. What better way to celebrate the holidays and give back to our community?! Pumpkins are still in. In this case, in our soup. Ever heard of chicken pumpkin tortilla soup? We definitely haven't. A friend shared it with us recently so we decided to give it a go... It was delicious. Needless to say, we’re big fans. So let’s jump right in… Ingredients: 3 to 4 chicken breasts 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 sweet onion, diced 2 large can plain pumpkin 1 large can Las Palmas mild enchilada sauce 1 small can tomatoes (15 oz) Chicken broth, to consistency you want 2 cups corn 1 can black beans 2 cups celery, chopped 2 cups carrots, chopped 4 Habanero chillies, diced To top: Tortilla strips Avocado Limes Cheddar cheese Directions: Cook chicken with olive oil on a pan, add the onions until the chicken is fully cooked. Slice the chicken beforehand, for a quicker meal. Then transfer the cooked chicken and onions to a soup pan and mix in the remaining ingredients. Stir until the ingredients are combined. Cover the mixture and let simmer for one hour. Uncover and enjoy. We hope you enjoy this seasonal treat as much as we did! AUTHOR - MEET JESSIE PARMENTER
Jessie is a Certified Home Stager. The right side of her brain has taken over her mind allowing the creative juices to constantly be flowing — and we love her for it. Luckily for us, her previous work in hospitality and events have landed her at Creating Home San Diego. In her free time she enjoys surfing, eating (everything), and visiting friends. Email Jessie. During this wild year, one thing remains strong: friendship. No matter what is taking place in this world, friends have been there. The highs and the lows. The real friends have seen it all and remain true. Times have been tough. We have been isolated, jobs have been lost, relationships have ended, some have lost loved ones. These situations should not be handled alone. We need community. We need hugs. We need 3-hour long facetime calls with friends. At the beginning of COVID-19 I was furloughed. I only told my close friends because it was embarrassing and tough for me. The following week, I received multiple venmos from friends with sweet notes like, “have a glass of wine on me” or “get yourself something nice”. These were sweet gestures that made my days brighter. I became involved in weekly Zoom happy hours where I laughed with friends all over the country and the world. We found comfort in one another. We needed that community and found a way to have it, despite the circumstances. Regardless of physical isolation, friendships have become stronger. I find contentment in knowing that I am loved and cared for. Now, with the recent political unrest in this country, I have also been able to lean on friends. Friends, that I agree with, but also friends that I disagree with. Friends can share life experiences and new perspectives that facilitate an open-mind. These friendships have kept me grounded. No matter the circumstances, friends are there with you. Keep pouring into your valuable relationships and allowing others to pour into you. Friendship stimulates a life of adventure, comfort, and excitement. AUTHOR - MEET JESSIE PARMENTER

Your house is probably still full of candy, spider webs (hopefully the fake ones), and other Halloween decorations. However, it’s time for the transition to fall decor. You know, keep the pumpkin and ditch the zombie kind of transition. Fall decor is exciting because it is a subtle and fun way to keep your house up to date with the seasons. Let’s take a look at a common space in your home, the living room. If you have the resources, we love switching out our pillows for a rustic orange pillow paired with a beige pillow with a subtle pattern. Add some mini pumpkins, of varying color, on your side tables. Place a nice fall wreath around a cinnamon, apple scented candle on your dining table. Lastly, line your mantle with candles, pumpkins, and tall flowers. One space, everyone entering your home, will see is the exterior entrance. If you have steps, place some medium size pumpkins on each step, occasionally throwing in some nice fall mums. Keep it simple and cute! A general tip to keep in mind when shopping for fall decor: white pumpkins are in and they look great next to a vase of orange million bells, orange lilies, red dahlias or red daisies. An additional and resourceful tip is that pinecones are a fun transitional piece that can be used for winter decorations, as well. It’s always nice to plan ahead. We hope you can take away a few, fun, fall decor tips from us and enjoy the fall weather along with it. AUTHOR - MEET JESSIE PARMENTER

We know this has been a wild week. With the election nearly over, many people are experiencing an array of emotions. Some are hurt and upset, while others are satisfied. Regardless of where you fall, please be compassionate towards the people around you. The first step: listen. If you missed our newsletter last week, take a look at “The Art of Listening” post for a deeper dive into how to effectively listen. It’s important that we take the time to truly listen to those around us so that we can try to understand where they may be coming from and how they feel personally. The second step: respect. One of the easiest ways to show compassion is through respect. This doesn’t mean we have to agree with this person, but the least we can do is respect their views and validate their emotions. This will make the next step a whole lot easier, too. The third step: console. At this moment, we should not be reacting defensively. Rather, we should be showing empathy and comforting those who are hurting. Nodding along as someone speaks, giving them a hug, or buying them a sweet treat. Consoling can be shown in all sorts of facets. The final step: love. At the end of the day, we should be loving others through our words and our actions. Show those around you how much you truly care. So take a moment to reflect on how you can show compassion to those around you. Whether this is at work, with friends, or with family. Everyone is deserving of compassion, just as you are, too. Author - MEET JESSIE PARMENTERJessie is a Certified Home Stager. Halloween is Saturday?! It’s a bit spooky how quickly the holiday snuck up on us. Nonetheless, we are ready to share some of our last minute Halloween party treats. There are so many yummy dessert options. We’ll list a few below and then share how to make our favorite one.
Now for our favorite treat. Peanut Butter, apple smiles. We chose it as our favorite because we’re trying to be healthy(ish) this fall. Now put on your small and let’s make a treat. Ingredients: 4 Granny Smith Apples 1 cup Peanut Butter 1 cup mini marshmallows 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions: Slice the apples with an apple slicer. Sprinkle lemon juice on top to keep them fresh. Spread about 1tsp of peanut butter on one side of each apple slice. Place about 6 marshmallows in the peanut butter of one apple slice. Place another apple slice (peanut butter side down) on top of the marshmallows. Repeat until all ingredients are used. We hope you enjoy this yummy treat inspired by Jorie Mark. For a healthier option the marshmallows can be substituted for a nut or yogurt covered raisin. Author - Meet Jessie ParmenterJessie is a Certified Home Stager. Listening. Something we think we’re always good at. Until, we’re asked to repeat what someone said or to form an appropriate response. We often mix up the terms hearing and listening. More often than not, we end up hearing what people are saying, rather than listening. The sounds are coming in, but they are not sinking in. Our goal needs to be that we’re actively listening to everyone we speak with. It’s tough — we’ve got our own life with our own thoughts and issues. But really listening to someone is significant. You can understand the true meaning of what is being said. You can learn something new about them and even yourself. What’s a common habit for us to hear and not listen? Forming our response while others are still speaking. This means we’re only listening to a portion, but tune out the rest while we’re preparing our response. We can’t actively be listening to someone if we’re thinking about our response the whole time. We need to remember to be present. To take in the meaning of what’s being said and to delay our response so that we’re able to pick up on what’s not verbally being said. Show your loved ones you care, by listening. We love when we’re truly listened to. It makes us feel all gushy inside. So spread the gush. Get out there and get into some deep conversations. Who knows what you might learn. Be in the moment. Be intentional. Be mindful. Listen. Author - mEET jESSIE parmenterJessie is a Certified Home Stager.
